My Off To College Advice

It's the second half of August which means some people will be heading off to college for the first time or heading back there. There's plenty of advice to be given for those entering into their first year; I'm sure most of what I can offer on the matter will be similar to what other people have to say. After graduating last spring I can say I had little regret for my time in college, but there were a few things I wish I had done differently.

1. If you decide to stay at home and go to a community college for the first few years, don't be ashamed of that decision. I did my first two years at Northwestern Michigan College, living in my parents house, taking a light load of classes, and getting my first job. I was debt free for those first few years and it gave me time to really figure out what I wanted to do next. Yes, it sucked having to be home when all my friends were away and having independent adventures, but I met one of my best friends during that first year here. I also think I was better prepared to live away from home when I was 20 rather than 18. I'm not saying it's a smarter choice to wait and transfer to a university after a few years, but that's just what worked out better for me and it's certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

2. Get to know your professors. Seriously, this is the one thing I completely regret not doing. I only went to office hours a few times over the years and hardly ever asked questions or spoke up in class. If you're shy like me, you don't have to make yourself known in front of the entire class, go up to the professor afterwards and introduce yourself. They will really appreciate your enthusiasm and when you do have a problem it will be easier to approach them. Plus in the long run you might be able to use them as a reference for grad school or internships.

3. a) It doesn't hurt to think ahead. I'm not saying you need a five year plan. It can be really hard and overwhelming trying to make decisions at this point in your life that will affect so much of your future. Often we get stuck just trying to pass one semester without thinking of the next one. If you can, talk to an advisor and set up what classes to take and when over the next few years. Don't just follow up with your advisor when you're forced to. I got stuck needing five credits my last semester because I didn't ask the right questions. I could have taken more classes during the summer and graduated a little earlier had I been more aware.

3. b) Just remember, you have options. I know plenty of people who switched their majors multiple times while in school, and some people that are going back to school for something different now. It may seem like once you pick a path you're stuck on it, but you can always find your way to a different destination.

4. Make friends. Make friends with people in your dorm, make friends with people in your classes, make friends with your friends' friends. Hopefully you'll stay close with a few friends from high school, but don't expect to stay tight with everyone you already know, especially if they're going off to a different school. Making friends isn't only important for social reasons but academic as well. Get to know at least one person in each of your classes. A few of my professors forced us on the first day to exchange contact information with at least one other person in class, this way if you ever missed a lecture you had someone to ask for notes. One thing that I always failed to do was follow up with that person before desperately asking for their notes. You know how hard it is to remember exactly who you exchanged information with after only interacting with them for a few minutes the first day. Seriously I awkwardly walked down a row of chairs one day sort of nervously staring at people wondering who I had emailed because I couldn't remember what they looked like... it was embarrassing.

5. Try to get along with your roommate. I was lucky enough to get a single person dorm room my first year at Western. I lived in the transfer dorm (which was a great way to make friends), and everyone there had their own room for the same cost as a double. My second and third year I lived in a four person apartment with three other girls. The apartment complex paired me up with people, so I didn't know any of the girls ahead of time. The first year and a half I was living there, I became friends with two of my roommates. We hung out, had study parties, and went out together. There was plenty of drama and awkward moments, but we managed. When new girls moved in I tried to be friends with them, but gave up and spent most of my time in my room or at my friends' apartments. You don't need to be friends with your roommates, but it helps if you can be friendly. If you have a problem with their dishes or the amount of noise they make in the morning it's best to confront them. If you don't like confrontation your best option is to let your negative feelings about the person and their habits go. There's no point in being angry with someone if you aren't going to say anything about it.

6. Go to class, when necessary. I wasn't always great at attending classes. I went most of the time, but if I woke up late, or too late for the bus, I just wouldn't go (granted this never happen on exam/major test days). Unfortunately, certain professors will have attendance policies, make sure you know them well (see bonus advice below!) The more classes you skip the harder it will be to return to class, and the deeper you'll be digging yourself into a hole. Go to the classes when your grade depends on it; this includes times when you'll be taught information that is important for you passing the class (which really is most of the time.)

7. Go to the Student Rec Center. Western has a really nice Student Recreation Center that was free for students. Even after I moved off campus and had a gym at my apartment complex, I still occasionally went to the Rec Center to workout. Working out not only helps you ward off the dreaded Freshman fifteen, but it can also give you a much needed energy boost and help you stay focused and stress free. Studies also show that people who exercise regularly fall asleep faster, which can come in handy. Despite the annoying meat heads and girls who show up wearing a full face of makeup, the Rec Center can also be a great place to stay motivated to workout. Maybe I'm weird but I liked the atmosphere of the gym, plus there was always hot guys around.

Also don't be embarrassed to go, if you actually make time to go to the gym you're already a winner. Just avoid doing the above when you're busy trying to impress someone.

8. Buy used books, or rent your books. Self explanatory. It will save you money and you don't need a fancy new textbook anyways. You'll be spending enough on college, save where you can.

9. Have fun, but not too much fun. Remember that you're paying to go to college, and if you yourself are not paying, someone out there is. Do not waste your time and resources taking classes if you aren't going to commit yourself to learning. College isn't for everyone. If you'd rather spend every night partying, don't pay $400 a credit for a class you've committed to failing. Search for that balance between having fun and getting your work done.
10. Say yes to things. Really this is the greatest life advice I could give anyone. I know from experience that I've never regretted a night of going out, a football game, or even just meeting a friend for a study party. As much as I like to be alone, the best memories I have from college are times I spent out with friends. If you're feeling apprehensive about doing something always ask yourself, "will I regret not doing this?" Then even if the answer is maybe/maybe not, get your butt up and go anyway. Even bad memories turn into stories you can laugh at later on in life. Just say yes.

*Bonus advice: READ THE SYLLABUS! I know they're the most boring pieces of paper you'll ever be continually forced to read through during every first day of class, but they are also super important. Most of them will contain information you already know, but things like the attendance policy, exam rules, and extra credit information can vary. I got myself into major trouble in one of my art classes at Western because I would often leave early. I'd leave when I was frustrated, or when I felt like I had nothing more to work on for the day (and I was not the only person who left early). My professor handed me a slip two weeks before class was over saying my grade was being greatly affected by my absences. At first I was mad he waited so long to bring it up, then I realized it was right in the syllabus all along; it was completely my fault. I waited until I was calmed down enough that I wouldn't start crying in front of him (seriously, don't do that, it's not very professional) and then I explained that I had been unaware of the policy, apologized for my behavior, and asked if there was anything I could do to make up my grade. Luckily he told me he had only marked my most recent absences and that I wasn't in any danger of failing. After that incident, I always double checked the syllabus and never left another art class early.

**I am not, and will never claim to be, an expert on anything in life. This post and all other ones on here are of my own opinion and based off personal experience. Hope you enjoy!

Grilled Cheese and Birthday Celebrations

Today I got to see a close friend that I haven't seen since graduation in April. Nicole and I met when we lived in the dorms my first year at Western. Over the past 3 years we've done a lot together and I miss having her around to go see movies, make Meijer runs, always make me laugh, and provide me with chocolate bars. It was really great to see her and bf, Brandon (affectionately nicknamed the creeper). Plus it gave me a good excuse to get lunch at The Grand Traverse Pie Company... it had just been too long. When Nicole first suggested they might come over and see me on their way back to Kalamazoo (they were camping in Oscoda), I got a little scared I wouldn't find any place suitable for Nicole's picky eating habits. Then I realized The Pie Co. would have grilled cheese; Nicole pretty much lived off of grilled cheese our first year at Western. She's the pickiest eater I know and it never ceases to amaze me the effort she goes through to avoid anything that might actually be good for her. Being around her is always interesting and entertaining.

Today was also my brother's 27th birthday. This year he requested we go to Short's Brewing Company in Bellaire for dinner and drinks. I had never been to their restaurant, only to their actual brewery, and was excited to finally see it for myself. The place was cool, really laid back and crowded with families. I wanted to try just about everything on their menu, all of it sounded amazing. In the end, I decided to split a pizza with some other people in the group, and my dad and I shared a flight of beer. We were able to choose five different beers to try out, but I'm pretty sure the Strawberry Shortcake beer was my favorite... yum. I love my family and am so blessed to be close to them. They're also a great source of humor; I'm surprised no one peed themselves from laughing tonight.

Happy Birthday Taylor!

Graduation!

It's been about a month since graduation, but I'm finally getting these up here. I still can't believe I'm a college graduate. It's official too since I just got my diploma in the mail last week. The day was wonderful and I'm glad I let my mom convince me to participate in the ceremony. Here's just a few of my favorite photos from before and after commencement.

My dad, me, and my brother

Clearly we covered all our bases on these babies.

I love my family and without them this day would have never come. They also helped make the entire weekend fun, from our dinner at Bell's Friday night, to our dinner at Beer Exchange the next night, and letting me ditch them to go out with my friends (haha). There's nothing like family.

Olympics, Summer School, and Insanity

I've been kind of MIA in blog world lately but it's been for good reasons. I had two more exams this week for my summer classes (which by the way are even harder to study for when the Olympics are on.) My Survey of Behavior Analysis Research class has proven to be a test, and after huge doubt in my ability to pass the class, I managed to pull off a B on my 3rd exam on Wednesday! I don't think I've ever been so happy for a B before. Two more weeks to go and I'll be done with classes and getting to head home for a bit. Three weeks or so until the big bike trip (more about that later). About Four weeks before Fall classes begin... time flies!

This past week was full of fun roommate moments. In a few weeks my roommate Amanda is moving into a two bedroom in the same apartment complex and my roommate Nikki is moving to East Lansing. I'm gonna miss having these girls so close, but Amanda and I already have study dates and Insanity nights planned. The three of us started the Insanity workouts almost two weeks ago now. After experiencing the pain of Insanity last summer (and the payoffs) I was nervous but excited to get back into the routine and try to finally finish all 63 days of the workout. I'll have to take a few days for long bike rides and ultimately the bike trip but they'll be totally worth it.

The Insanity Countdown Calendar. Almost two weeks down! Jeah!

Lastly a few words (and pictures) about the Olympics. From gymnastics, to beach volleyball, to diving, to swimming I love the summer Olympics! It's always exciting to watch people's dreams come true and to band together as a country. For me, swimming is probably my favorite event. Lochte, Phelps, Berens, Adrian, Soni, Franklin... I could keep going because the whole USA team this year is awesome!

Jones, Adrian, Lochte, and Hansen

It's no question Ryan is my favorite

Nathan Adrian is like a hot teddy bear. He's just adorable. And that smile!

I think I might be heading to Dunham's this weekend to purchase a one piece swim suite in order to start working out in the pool. My roommate used to be a swimmer and I'm hoping she can teach me a few moves and we can push each other even harder. I just keep imagining what my body will look like after all this Insanity, biking, and swimming. Rock hard hopefully.

Gonna get my Missy on!!!!!!

Indoor Bike Ride

Oh the joys. Sitting on a stationary bike is about as exciting as running on a treadmill, that's right, it's not.
I mean, I guess it's probably better that the bikes at the Centre have monitors on them so you ride a virtual trail, but still. I did 5.5 miles and was done. Biking indoors can be hard, so don't judge me. I actually put my feet in the straps of the pedals this time too, mostly because I didn't even notice they were there before.  I was just surprised and how it almost made it harder, or made different muscles work I guess. I just can't wait to challenge myself this summer with this trip and hope everything works out for it to happen.

It Might Sound Pathetic Comparatively...

But to me it's a big deal. I ran for a straight 5 minutes tonight, meaning straight half a mile. It felt good too!

I didn't plan on going to the gym tonight, but I couldn't focus on hw and I didn't know how else to clear my mind. I'm hoping it stays clear, although I doubt it. I kind of feel like my brain's been taking a trip on the TARDIS lately.

Anyway... I miss running like that and I definitely want to do it again soon. Hopefully I can build up some mileage again. I only went for 1.3 miles or so, 20 minutes. A short and sweet (or should I say sweaty) homework break.

So I guess here's the mile breakdown:

  • walk 3 minutes
  • run 5 minutes
  • walk 2 minutes
  • run 1 minute
  • walk 2 minutes
  • run 1 minute (finished the mile here)
  • walk 6 minutes
I've been on a roll with this and I'm not gonna let it stop anytime soon. I just keep hoping my knees and shins will stay pain free... although I am definitely feeling a bit of tension in my right shin (the one that always gets hurt). Definitely need to rest it tomorrow and make sure I build up strength.

Exercise Log: Week 1 of Intervention

Well I made it the minimal requirement of 3 days for week 1 so far and I'm feeling pretty good about it. I'm definitely struggling more than I used to and can tell it will take some work to get my stamina up for running or biking any sort of distance.
On Friday I went to the Rec to bike for 2.5 miles (although I swear it was lying to me because I was on there for roughly 40 minutes).
Sunday I just worked out at the Centre's gym for half an hour, alternating running and walking. As well as some core and arm exercises.
Tonight I started out on the treadmill for 10 minutes at an incline of 4-5 walking, then I moved onto the stationary bike for just over 20 minutes and 5 miles. I couldn't believe how bad my my legs hurt just after that little ways. So much time ahead of me. I'm definitely going to have to get to the gym more than 3 or 4 days a week.

I just wish I had my actual bike here to ride outside on a trail. Which reminds me that I need to find a bike shop around Kalamazoo so I can go get fit. If anyone knows of any let me know. Also if you have trails to recommend, I'd appreciate that as well.

This Will Hurt

A few things:

  • I had to come up with a behavior to modify for a Health Psych project so I chose exercise. I set a goal of 3 days a week (T/F/Sun) for at least 30 minutes for the first 2 weeks, and 4 days a week (T/Th/F/Sun) for at least 30 minutes for the second 2 weeks. For each week I make my goal, I get to buy a song on iTunes.
  • Since today is Sunday, I needed to workout. The unfortunate thing being St. Patty's Day was yesterday, which left my body a little less apt to workout... but I did it anyway.
  • My dad called tonight to remind me to get spinning because after some research he discovered it's about 320 miles from Kalamazoo to Normal, IL. So what we thought was going to be a two maybe three day ride is now a four day ride... 80 miles each. That really will hurt, even after training I'm thinking.
  • I will train train train train train!
  • This is just a warm up for my across the US ride one day.
  • Why do I insist on dreaming so big again?

Movie Number 9

Number 9 out of 365 never seen before movies.... yes I realize I'm really far behind now. There's probably no catching up but it's not really about making the goal as much as it's about attempting the challenge.

Number 9 happened to be the Vow. Watched February 13, 2012.

4 out of 5 stars.
I went to see this with two of my good friends here at Western. A little pre-Valentines Day girls night out. This movie was much anticipated and I was not disappointed by what it turned out to be. I loved that this was based of a true story and I would love to read the book about it as well. The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5, instead of 5 out of 5 is the fact that I found it somewhat painful to watch in the middle. It was just so hard to see him fighting to hold on and her losing everything from 4 years or so. I can't even imagine.

Goals For 2012

I know it's already the 9th so maybe this is a little late, but I wanted to put down some of the goals I have set for myself for 2012.

  • set aside at least an hour a day to read
  • don't eat when bored
  • compliment people more when I admire something they're wearing or what they are doing
  • meet more people
  • get out more: go study in public, go read in a coffee shop
  • get a job/save money
  • take more yoga classes and practice meditation
  • see at least one artist that I admire in concert
  • graduate from college
  • travel
  • stick with running
I hope everyone who set goals this year is sticking with them and achieving new thing. Good luck to all who make resolutions or set goals for 2012!

A Look Back on Winter Break

Seeing as this will most likely be my last official "Winter Break," it made me realize that 2012 will bring the end of my undergraduate career (or at least I hope so). This break was really about sleeping in and relaxing and de-stressing.

I stayed in my pajamas, watched movies, and read books in front of the fire place.
I spent some wonderful time with my family.
I spent some amazing and fun times with my friends.
I caught up with people.
I went out for drinks.
I went to my favorite coffee shops.
I browsed the book store from long periods of time.
I went to see White Christmas with Sandy.
I went to see Sherlock Holmes with my Mom.
I had lunch with my cousin.
I spent New Years randomly dancing in the street.

Sometimes I miss just being home and it makes me not want to go back to school, but at the same time, I like living away from home. I like learning. I like that I still get scheduled breaks. We'll see what the semester brings.

Exam week

blerg! Exams kinda suck guys, luckily this semester I have two art classes in which both of those projects are pretty much finished (I have like 2 things I need to glue onto my poster board before Wednesday), no exam for my Psychology of Genders class, and my research proposal paper to finish writing for my Research Methods class. That means that I really only have one test to study for :)

I wish it were Thursday already. I can't wait to go home and spend time with my family for a bit. I can't wait to see my friends and my cousins. I can't wait to go watch Christmas movies at the State (hopefully) and get coffee from my favorite coffee shops. I can't wait to put some of my ornaments my mom left off for me on the tree (or at least I think she left some off for me). I can't wait to eat lots of yummy food and see all the pretty lights. Christmas time is pretty much the best time of the year.

So with that I will leave you one Christmas song from my favorite holiday cd this year and one song that I just can't stop listening to lately.

Christmas: Christmas Waltz by She and Him

Other: In the Mourning by Paramore

Final Project Inspiration

My final project for my Form and Surface (2D) art class is a piece of giant billboard poster covered in an interpretation of important lessons, ideas, or facts we have learned from our previous classes in college. Since I've taken quite a few art classes I'm throwing in a lot of psychology influences with brain functions, neurons, and neurotransmitters. I also wanted to include some painting from my painting class this summer and some sort of representation of schizophrenia from my abnormal psych class. I need a place to keep all of my idea's in one place so I resorted to this.

Here's some picture inspiration:
(dopamine)

Per usual I found a lot of inspiration in music as well.

City of Owls

I went with my friend Nicole last night to Grand Rapids for an Owl City concert at the Intersection. Owl City is Nicole's favorite band and she begged me to go with her. I like some of the band's songs, but have not listened to them in a while. I honestly didn't know what to expect and in no way did I think the show was going to be as packed as it was. I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome of last night because not only was Owl City a great concert, but their opening act, Day's Difference, was also pretty good. Even the venue was great. The only problem with last night was that I wasn't 5 inches taller... really being in a crowd of people when you're 5 foot 3 does not exactly give you the greatest view. Even though, we were still able to see the stage pretty well during some parts.

(the best one of Adam that I got)

The thing i love most about seeing any band in concert is the energy in the crowd. Everyone seems to be happy and having a good time. Everyone singing along to the songs like Fireflies, Hello Seattle, the encore Vanilla Twilight. I tried to get some videos but the sound didn't turn out to well; I was a little bummed.

Nicole took a lot more pictures than I did and happened to get some really cool ones...

Now I'm just ready to go to more concerts. Nicole asked me what band I would want to see live the most, but I really can't decide who I would choose.

Went to see Jason Derulo tonight

Hey did a show at Miller Auditorium and me and a few friends got late tickets for the grand tier. It was fun purely because it was a concert but it didn't last long. The opening act was Black Violin which was cool but at the same time and hour of that got me a little tired and not pumped up like opening acts should do to you. Still, the $12 tickets were totally worth the show.

Me and my friend Nicole had fun dancing

hello guilty pleasure song that I haven't stopped listening to for a month (I don't listen to the radio that often so it hadn't been overplayed for me yet)

Now I'm stuck doing homework till the wee hours of the morning. Luckily I have my friends on Skype to keep me company :) So glad we're all late nighters and homework procrastinators.

First Documented Turkey Training "Run"

"run" aka a jogging pace

2 miles took me 33 minutes tonight. Yikes that's slow, I feel like people walk the whole thing faster than I can semi run it. I have started out by alternating running and walking because that seemed to work on previous occasions.

  • walk 5 minutes
  • run 2 minutes
  • walk 1 minute
  • run 2 minutes
  • walk 1 minute
  • run 1 minute
  • walk 2 minute
  • run 1 minute
  • walk 2 minutes
  • run 1 and a half minutes
  • walk 2 and a half minutes
  • run 1 minute
  • walk 3 minutes
  • run 1 minute
  • walk 3 minutes
  • run 1 half minute
  • walk 3 and a half minutes

I think that's right.... it should total to 10 minutes of running time and 23 minutes of walking time.

Even though I have a ton of homework I knew I needed to find time to train and just plain get exercise. I'm just making excuses if I say I have too much homework because I still take breaks and I might as well spend one of them working out.

I just got back today from a weekend with my great grandma. I love spending time and getting to talk with her.

The Perfect Fall Weekend in Spartan Land

The last few years I've managed to get tickets to a Michigan State football game from my friend Sam. Last year I made it for the Notre Dame game which was awesome. If you don't remember that game here you go....

A few weeks ago Sam told me she could get me free tickets to the Wisconsin game if I could make it to East Lansing. Of course i said yes and managed to overcome my fear of driving down here enough to make the well worth it trip. If you weren't in East Lansing yesterday or if you missed the game on TV, you missed out BIG TIME! That game was beyond exciting and amazing. I'm so happy I went and so happy about everything. As the group of us walked back to Sam's apartment last night around 1 am I could stop smiling, and people yelling Go Green, Go White always make me happy as well. It's days like that that I'm slightly bummed I decided to go to Western over MSU because when it comes to sports they have my heart. Spartan teams are bound to win their fighting is the best rah rah rah! (The sad thing is I always accidentally start singing the MSU fight song during WMU games).

The moment right before this play was so quiet and no one wanted to move, every one was holding their breath and then everything erupted. I'm surprised I managed to keep my balance the whole game while jumping around and high fiving people. I even still have a voice today.

Other than football the whole weekend was fun. Sam was a pretty kick ass host and I think I ate better this weekend than I normally do here. So many pumpkin flavored treats this weekend (plus I got sent home with some, I felt like I was leaving my house not my friend's).

Friday was mexican night with a nice gathering of friends at the apartment for burritos and drinks
Saturday included tailgating and the game
Sunday we went to the pumpkin patch for cider and doughnuts :)

Have I mentioned enough how much I love fall?

Current Obsessions

1. Somebody that I Used to Know(ft. Kimbra) by Gotye. I have been listening to this song nonstop for the last day and a half.

2. New Girl. I've already watched the pilot episode again because I got it for free on iTunes this week. I love Zooey Deschanel, and Jess is pretty much the perfect character. I'm so excited for new shows this year.

3. Hunger Games. I finally broke down and bought the trilogy because I haven't been able to make it to the library and I finished One Day. I had only read about 60 pages (nook version) of it from reading out of friend's books over the past month or so. I bought the books last Saturday night and have already finished Hunger Games and read 100 pages of Catching Fire. I just don't want these books to stop. SO GOOD!

4. Tumblr. All day, all night.

5. Shoes.  I want new shoes so bad and I think today it finally hit me that in reality I have no money. All the money that is currently residing in my bank account is not for me to just spend on shoes, shoes, and more shoes, it's there to pay for my apartment. There's a really cute pair of purple Converse I want, and a pair of TOMS, and a pair of heals, and a pair of boots for fall/winter that would all look wonderful on me and in my closet. Sadly, I know that for me, none of these shoes are a necessity, just a luxury which I can not currently afford.

6. The Art Buildings. I pretty much like all my classes this semester, but being in the art buildings with all the artsy people makes me super happy. I feel so comfortable when I walk in there and excited for class.

Western for the Win!

This weekend has been marvelous! I went and spent Friday night at Corie's dorm room so I was on campus already for the big game. Saturday the game started at noon so we got up and got ready early to get good seats, which was not hard but worth it. Western played our big rivals Central Michigan University and ended up killing it. We won 41-14!!!!
Go Broncos!

The game was fun and it ended up being an amazing day out. I wish I had brought my sunglasses... and put on sunscreen. We were expecting clouds and sweatshirt weather, but were pleasantly surprised.

Saturday was followed up with a trip to Ulta and Buffalo Wild Wings, which was totally worth the wait. I chowed down on those wings! So good. I broke down and bought some new nail polish at Ulta. I'm addicted and need to stop spending money on it, although I did have a coupon (yes, I'm trying to justify my purchase).

Finally Sunday was spent watching the Lions, reading the Hunger Games, watching Burlesque with Nicole (Cam Gigandet is so yummy in that movie, he'll always remind me of the OC), and working out. I'm back up a few pounds so I need to get serious. I haven't been working out on a regular basis at all, so that needs to change.
