2015!

It's a new year! After a very low key New Years Eve spent watching The Vampire Diaries with one of my closest friends and way too much food, I welcomed 2015 with Dick Clark's Rockin' Eve and a glass of sparkling wine. My new year began in a completely different way as 2014 began and it just felt right.

The promise of a new year always excites me. For certain reasons I'm not a big fan of resolutions, but I do love setting goals. Maybe most people see those being the same thing but I don't. Although I love setting goals all year round and don't find it necessary to wait until the start of a year to change parts of my life, I do find it prime time for assessments. So much can happen and change in a years time. 2014 wasn't a jam packed year for me, but looking back did reveal more than I expected. I look forward to seeing what 2015 holds.

I'm sure if I looked back at my goals for 2014, this list would have some overlaps. This is what I like about goals instead of resolutions. Goals do not have to be reached in a certain amount of time. They can be larger, less specific ideas you wish to fulfill. Goals focus more on achievements rather than being negative about the life you're currently living. Goals can be anything you want them to be, endless possibilities.

  • Nail down a career direction and specific steps to help get me there
  • Make more friends and talk to people more often
  • Be nicer
  • Make more money (make it happen!)
  • Be active every day
  • Stop worrying about so much of my life and let it happen
  • Enjoy nature, explore, marvel in it
  • Push myself to create
  • Make more to-do lists (and stick to them)
  • Blog at least once a week
  • Photograph more, maybe partner with someone to find a way to develop skills
  • Find a mentor (possibly a life coach?)
  • Write in my journal more often
  • Don't watch or read anything I'm not feeling invested or interested in
  • Focus on one thing at a time, don't interrupt the task at hand to start something new (at least when it comes to personal time. For example reading part of a page and then stopping to start a TV show and then stopping after 10 minutes to watch a Youtube video. This has seriously gotten to be my worst habit.)
Hopefully this list of goals will help guide me through next year in a positive and healthy way. When I'm feeling out of sorts I can always come back here to get myself back on track. Happy 2015!!

Are you a resolution and/or goal maker? What was on your list this year?

My Favorite Christmas Movies

I love holiday movies and luckily there's plenty of places to find them on TV this time of year. Many Christmas movies hold special memories for me (as they do for many), so I decided to share a few of my favorites. Besides White Christmas being at the top of the list, I wouldn't exactly say these are in any particular order.

1. White Christmas: I love this movie for many reasons. One: the music, two: the dancing, three being that my grandparents introduced me to the movie. There were certain things I could only do at my grandparents' houses growing up, mostly because they owned something my family did not. The limit of those things helps make them extra special through the years. Growing up, my grandpa and grandma Strong were the ones who owned White Christmas on VHS and once I had seen its magic there was no tearing me away. I fell in love with the dancing, the dresses, and their voices. I spent hours contemplating Vera-Ellen's tiny waist and the tone of Bing Crosby's voice. The movie is everything I love wrapped into a wonderful Christmas package.

2. Elf: This movie is always good for a laugh. There are so many hilarious quotes come from this film. Plus I love Will Ferrell.

3. It's a Wonderful Life: What better way to remind yourself how wonderful life really is. Value the life you have! An amazing movie that will warm your heart in the winter cold.

4. The Year Without a Santa Claus: Let's face it the Misers and their little song and dance is what puts this movie above the other holiday claymation movies (at least in my mind). I wanted to add all the wonderful claymation and animated holiday movies like Rudolph and Frosty to this list, but there just wasn't enough room. Also, Santa is important.

5. The Santa Clause: It came out when I was a kid and we have watched it as a family a lot over the years. Some good memories are tied to this movie as well. I wish they would have stopped after the first one though, 2 and 3 aren't that great.

6. Home Alone: This was another movie I could only watch at my grandparents. Home Alone was the one movie I always (literally every single trip) watched when we visited my grandparents in Grand Rapids. I have no idea how many times I have watched this movie (or really any of these) but it's a lot. I always tear up at the end, it never fails.

7. Love Actually: Speaking of crying, this is another movie that gets me going. Love, man. There's so many good aspects to this movie. I mean it's a bunch of famous English actors with lovely story lines. Love Actually is the type of movie that makes you simultaneously laugh and cry, it does stuff to your emotions.

8. How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (Animated Short): I'm not the biggest fan of the newer movie with Jim Carrey, which is why I felt the need to be specific about this choice. The animated movie is another classic in my house. It was one of the movies we had taped on VHS along with a bunch of other holiday movies. I wish we still had a VHS player because one of my favorite things about watching our old tapes instead of them on TV now is the old commercials.

9. Miracle on 34th Street: I'm putting the newer version on this list mostly because it was the one I watched as a child (even though it is equally as good if not slightly better). I didn't actually watch the original version until a few years ago. Anyway, another great movie about the importance of Santa Claus, as a symbol for hope, faith, and all the good that can happen during the holiday season.

10. The Polar Express: There's a lot of Christmas traditions in my family, and one of those special traditions is my mom reading The Polar Express on Christmas eve to my brother and I. My mom has done this ever since I can remember. We still do it, even though both my brother and I are in our twenties and no longer believe in Santa. When the movie came out we all went to go see it together. I love Tom Hanks and everything that was added to the story.

Honorable mentions include,

- The Holiday: I love this movie (it might even rank up there with all time favorites), but I watch it all year round. I don't limit this movie to the holiday time period like most of the movies listed above, so I'm putting it here instead.

- It Happened on 5th Avenue: I just watched this for the first time last week and felt the need to include it on the list.

What are your favorite holiday movies? Is there anything I need to add to the list?

Goals For 2012

I know it's already the 9th so maybe this is a little late, but I wanted to put down some of the goals I have set for myself for 2012.

  • set aside at least an hour a day to read
  • don't eat when bored
  • compliment people more when I admire something they're wearing or what they are doing
  • meet more people
  • get out more: go study in public, go read in a coffee shop
  • get a job/save money
  • take more yoga classes and practice meditation
  • see at least one artist that I admire in concert
  • graduate from college
  • travel
  • stick with running
I hope everyone who set goals this year is sticking with them and achieving new thing. Good luck to all who make resolutions or set goals for 2012!

A Look Back on Winter Break

Seeing as this will most likely be my last official "Winter Break," it made me realize that 2012 will bring the end of my undergraduate career (or at least I hope so). This break was really about sleeping in and relaxing and de-stressing.

I stayed in my pajamas, watched movies, and read books in front of the fire place.
I spent some wonderful time with my family.
I spent some amazing and fun times with my friends.
I caught up with people.
I went out for drinks.
I went to my favorite coffee shops.
I browsed the book store from long periods of time.
I went to see White Christmas with Sandy.
I went to see Sherlock Holmes with my Mom.
I had lunch with my cousin.
I spent New Years randomly dancing in the street.

Sometimes I miss just being home and it makes me not want to go back to school, but at the same time, I like living away from home. I like learning. I like that I still get scheduled breaks. We'll see what the semester brings.

365 Movies in 2012

Saw a 365 movie challenge on tumblr and thought "what the heck."

Movies I've watched this year other than Crazy Stupid Love, and that I've never seen before...

- X Men: First Stand- watched January 1st, 3 out of 5 stars. Definitely not my favorite X- Men movie.
- One Day- watched January 5th, 3 out of 5 stars. I loved the book and the movie was just ok. It just wasn't anything special.
- Singing in the Rain- watched January 6th, 5 out of 5 stars. It's hard to believe I've never actually seen this movie other than short clips, but I absolutely adored it. Gene Kelly, and the tap dancing, and the clothing, everything.
- Midnight in Paris: watched January 7th, 5 out of 5 stars. I loved the concept of this movie and of course Paris!

- New Years Eve: watched January 9th, 4 out of 5 stars. I really enjoyed this movie. I am a sucker for romantic and spontaneous things, plus I'm in love with New York City.
